Ultrasound Scans, Bon Secours Hospital Galway
An ultrasound is a non invasive method of imaging the body. As ultrasound does not require injections to be given and does not involve ionising radiation there are no contraindications to ultrasound.
During the examination a small amount of clear, odourless gel is applied to the area to be examined, the Consultant Radiologist then moves an ultrasound probe over the area, pressing gently when required. The probe emits sound waves, the echoes of which generate the images.

Consultation Process:
The ultrasound process at the Galway Bon Secours is performed by Consultant Radiologists.
Some preparation may be necessary for ultrasound (fasting for 6 hours or having a full bladder) and if this is the case the patient will have this explained to them when they make their appointment.
- The patient checks in at the main reception of the x ray services department.
- They will be invoiced and given a receipt.
- The patient then moves to the Ultrasound waiting area of the department.
- An ultrasound assistant will then bring the patient into the dedicated ultrasound room, where the may be asked to undress and given a gown – depending on the type of examination to be done.
- The duration of the scan depends on the type of imaging required, with an average scan taking 15 minutes.
Arranging Appointments:
A referral letter is required to be sent by phone or fax from your GP to the relevant consultant. Prior to an ultrasound appointment being made at the Galway Bon Secours Hospital a referral letter (from a doctor) should be received by the department. The department will then contact the patient and make the appointment with them.
If the patient has any special requirement such as sight or hearing deficits, requires any assistance (eg must have a hoist to get out of a chair) or has any cognitive deficit please let us know when making the appointment.
Opening Hours:
Ultrasound scanning is located within the X-Ray department of the Bon Secours hospital and is open from 8:30-4:30pm Monday to Friday. The appointments office is open during the same hours.
