Vascular Surgery
Mr Mahendran graduated in medicine in the Chennai University of India. He went on to complete his surgical training in the United Kingdom in 1991 and graduated with his surgical fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Mr Mahendran moved to Ireland in 1995 to continue his higher surgical training. He has had extensive surgical training in specialised units, in Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary, Liver Transplant and Thoracic surgery. Since 2002, Mr Mahendran has trained in numerous hospitals around Ireland, where he specialised in Vascular and Endovascular surgery involving arterial and venous diseases. He developed a special interest in the treatment of Varicose vein diseases and venous Ulcers and attained specialist Phlebology training at multiple varicose veins treatment & training centres around the world, USA, UK, Italy, Germany, Latvia, Slovenia and Poland. He has memberships with various organisations and continues to incorporate up to date techniques within his practice of minimally invasive venous treatments.
Mr Mahendran has taken many opportunities to teach throughout his career. He was appointed as the Senior lecturer in vascular surgery at the National University of Ireland in Galway where he taught medical students, nursing and biomedical engineering students. He was deeply involved as a mentor in the research programmes for medical and biomedical engineering students. He developed the Endovascular training and vascular nurse training programmes for the Western Vascular Institute. He served as a Director on the board of Western Vascular Institute.
Mr Mahendran was the first vascular surgeon to introduce minimally invasive venous treatment technologies in the Munster region. He set up the Phlebology practice dedicated to specifically treat varicose veins, at the Bon Secours Tralee in 2009. Here, he promotes Healthy Legs for Healthy Living by improving awareness regarding venous problems within the community.
