Haemovigilance
Haemovigilance is a set of surveillance procedures that covers the whole blood transfusion chain and detects and analyses unexpected or undesirable transfusion events before, during or after the administration of blood/blood components with the aim of preventing their occurrence or recurrence.
The purpose of the Haemovigilance Department is to improve the safety of transfusion therapy. The Haemovigilance team at the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee works closely so as to ensure that best practice is adhered to in relation to Blood Transfusion for patients throughout Kerry and Limerick
A Hospital Transfusion Committee exists that includes Medical, Scientific and Nursing staff, Consultant Haematologist and also includes the Director of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service or nominee. The committee meets approximately 4 times a year and discusses and advises on transfusion policies, inventory management, quality issues, haemovigilance and traceability.
The Hospital’s Haemovigilance team includes:
- The Haemovigilance Officer
- The Consultant Haematologist
- The Blood Transfusion Laboratory including On-Call Medical Scientists
- Hospital Nursing/Medical personnel involved in the administration and monitoring of Blood Components/Products.
- The Hospital Transfusion Committee (Consultant led)

The Haemovigilance officer at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee Mary Murphy ensures that all haemovigialnce related practice meets with recognised policies, guidelines and the standards expected within the EU Blood Directive 2002/98/EC
