The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at Bon Secours Hospital Galway treats many diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region
Mr Mark Wilson MCh, FRCSI(OMFS), MFDS RCSEd
Mark is a Galway native and graduated with honours degrees in both dentistry and medicine from UCC and RCSI respectively. After completing basic surgical training in Ireland he undertook 5-years of higher surgical training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in the South West of England. During his training he had high volume exposure to the management of both mucosal and skin cancers of the head and neck region. He was appointed as a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at the UL hospital group in 2018 but has now taken up post at Galway University Hospital.
In his final year of training, he was appointed as a Trainee Interface Group (TIG) Fellow in Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery on the London rotation. This fellowship provided him with advanced training in Facial Deformity Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery. In 2018, he was awarded a European Association of Cranio-maxillo-facial Surgeons travelling scholarship, which enabled him gain further reconstructive experience in Maxillofacial Units in Germany.
Mark has published numerous articles in the maxillofacial literature and was awarded a Master of Surgery degree by the Royal College of Surgeon in Ireland in 2014. He is involved with supervision and teaching of senior surgical trainees in OMFS and both undergraduate and postgraduate dental and medical students.
