In the Ophthalmology department at Bon Secours Hospital Galway, ophthalmic surgeons perform routine eye exams and screens, much like an optometrist. Ophthalmic Surgeons, are specialists in medical and surgical eye problems, and responsible for performing operations on the eyes. They are specially trained to provide the full spectrum of care, to complex and delicate eye surgery.

The ophthalmologist’s at our hospital in Galway are dedicated to providing the very best patient care, within a patient friendly environment.
Richard Comer is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. He graduated from NUIG and subsequently trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK. He became a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London and was awarded an MD from the Imperial College London for his research thesis on corneal transplantation. He did further sub specialised training in London and Vancouver, Canada before moving home to Galway. His specialist interests include cataract surgery, strabismus, oculoplastics, glaucoma, medical retinal and paediatric ophthalmology.

Monday – Thursday 8.30 – 5.00, Friday 8.30 to 1.00
Office Hours: Monday – Friday 8.30 – 5.00.
A referral letter is required to be sent from your GP by fax or post to the relevant consultant.
