Prior to your admission, it is important to ring your insurance provider to ensure your coverage and clarify any excesses or shortfalls on your policy. Depending on your policy, some insurers will seek an “excess” payment on arrival to hospital. An excess is a contribution you are required to pay towards a claim you make on your insurance policy. Policy holders may opt to make this contribution in an effort to lower the cost of the premium. This is a contract between you and your insurance company, and as such the hospital cannot intervene. In addition, you will be liable to cover any charges not covered under your insurance plan.
If you have private health insurance, your insurer may pay towards the cost of convalesence in an approved nursing home after a stay in hospital. If you have been recommended convalescence by your consultant or wish to arrange it, please do so prior to your admission.
You required to bring your medication to hospital with you, in their original containers. In addition to the actual medication, please bring a list with you. The list should include all prescription medication, vitamins or other food supplements, complementary medicines, nicotine replacement and herbal remedies you make take. Your community pharmacist will help you with this. We advise to seek assistance from your pharmacist to ensure that all the medication, dose and frequency are recorded to ensure continuity of the correct medication and brand during your hospital stay. Prior to certain procedures it may be necessary to discontinue some medications (e.g. warfarin, aspirin) for a period of time. Please follow the advice provided by your consultant. If you are unsure of anything, please contact your consultant
You may find the following checklist useful to help you prepare for your hospital stay.
When you arrive at the hospital please go to reception and you will be directed to the Admissions Department to complete your registration. We will ask you personal questions such as your name as it appears on your Birth Certificate/Marriage Certificate. People often have “known as names”, abbreviated names or even nicknames, but for safety we ask that all patients are registered as their name appears on their Birth or Marriage certificate. You will also be asked for your Next of Kin details and insurance details.
Once you have completed the admission process you will accompanied to your room if you are an inpatient or to a pre-op area if you are having a procedure as a day case.
Your room will have been booked in advance by your consultants secretary according to your insurance policy coverage and availability. Where many of the rooms are single occupancy there are some double and triple rooms. Where you have requested a particular room type, we will do our best to accomodate this request but it may not always be possible.
