Originally from Athlone, Dr Keaney graduated from UCD medical school in 2004. During his initial cardiac training in Ireland, he was awarded a Newman Fellowship in translational Medicine from UCD and the Mater. Dr Keaney undertook a fellowship in complex cardiac electrophysiology in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, the largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.
Dr Keaney took up a position as a consultant electrophysiologist and cardiologist in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in 2016, and is now the director of the Electrophysiology program at the Mater.
In addition to the Newman Fellowship above, Dr Keaney has contributed to a number of academic texts, including being an invited contributor to the most recent addition of the European Society of Cardiology textbook, and international guideline-writing committees. His main areas of research are catheter ablation of arrhythmias and stroke prevention in AF.
