Prof Byrne is a dual trained consultant physician in general internal medicine and geriatric medicine. He is the Associate Director of MD studies at Trinity College Dublin where he holds an academic appointment as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Gerontology. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Edinburgh. He is additionally trained in the areas of falls and syncope, pharmaceutical medicine and nutrition and dietetics.
He is an experienced clinical leader at national, regional and local jurisdictions where he has held/ holds Medical Director, Clinical Director and Regional Programme Director appointments. In addition, he has chaired the national nutrition clinical guideline development group on behalf of the Department of Health and he has been involved in National standard setting with HIQA.

As a generalist, Professor Byrne’s clinical and research interests are broad but focus on the areas of hospital medicine, health outcome research, clinical nutrition and health service management.
