Dr McGovern graduated from University College Cork with an honours degree in 2013. She completed basic specialist training in medicine at St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, and was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) in 2016. She subsequently undertook Cardiology Higher Specialist Training at Galway University Hospital, University Hospital Waterford, St. James’s Hospital, Connolly Hospital, and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
Following this, Dr McGovern completed a Clinical Research Fellowship with the Cardiovascular Research Institute Dublin/Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. This research was part of the European Union funded CORE MD project with a focus on the evidence supporting the use of surgical aortic and mitral valves. In 2023, she was a finalist in the Brian Maurer Young Investigator Award at the Irish Cardiac Society's annual scientific meeting. For the last two years of cardiology training (2022-2024), she undertook an Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
She returned to Ireland in September 2024 to take up a post as a Consultant Cardiologist in the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork. She is an Adjunct Senior Clinical Lecturer in University College Cork.
