Professor Gallagher graduated from RCSI in 2000. He joined the Higher Specialist Training Programme in Geriatric & General Internal Medicine at RCPI in 2004 during which he completed subspecialty training in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at St. Jame's Hospital, Dublin and a Senior Fellowship in Stroke Medicine at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK. In 2006 he was awarded a 3 year Clinical Research Fellowship by the Health Research Board of Ireland to complete his PhD thesis on "Appropriate Prescribing in Late Life" at UCC. He was appointed as Consultant Physician in Geriatric & General Internal Medicine to Cork University Hospital in 2011 and National Speciality Director of the Higher Specialist Training Programme in Geriatric Medicine at RCPI in 2016. More recently he has been Clinical Lead of the Cork Integrated Care Programme for Older People.
Professor Gallagher holds an academic apppointment as Senior Lecturer in Clnical Education at the School of Medicine, UCC and is a member of faculty at the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, UCC. He was co-principal investigator on the Irish National Audit of Dementia care in acute Hospitals and co-investigator on SENATOR, an ED-funded multicentre research programme into prescribing optimization in older people.
He has authored over 100 research publications which are widely cited and have influenced international policy and guideline development. In 2020, he was appointed by the Minister of Health to the Advisory Committee on Human Medicines at the HPRA Ireland.
