Dr O'Connor's clinical and research interests are in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention, low dose CT imaging, imaging morphometrics, and Medical Education including radiation protection education. Dr O’Connor is a general radiologist with subspecialist expertise in abdominal and interventional radiology including oncology, biliary and renal interventions including tumour ablation and portal vein embolisation.
Dr O’Connor has recent has recently served as chairman of the Southern Radiology Society, member of the radiation safety committees of CUH, UCC and the Faculty of Radiologists in Ireland, and external examiner for the NUIG Masters in Radiology programme. He has helped design and deliver radiation protection education in CUH and UCC, radiology teaching to allied professionals in the UCC Sports and Exercise Masters and Masters of radiography programmes. He is an examiner for the European Diploma in Radiology and member of the 2023 European Congress of Radiology program planning committee. He has made many invited national and international presentations, including the Faculty of Radiologists RCSI and European Congress of Radiology.
Dr O’Connor has been awarded funding from the Cork Cancer Research Centre, Enterprise Ireland, CiSA and SURE awards from UCC. Prior awards include the UCC Biodesign Award, Outstanding lecturer award from UCC medical students, presentation awards from ECR and ARRS. Medical students who has supervised have received national awards from the Faculty of Radiologists for their final year medical projects and presented these at national and international conferences. Dr O'Connor has published almost 100 peer reviewed indexed paper publications and 16 book chapters. His H index is 29 with 2600 citations and over 13,000 abstract views on UCCs CORA platform.
