Bon Secours Hospital Cork has an expert team in place to treat a wide range orthopaedic conditions.

The Bons Secours Hospital has been a major provider of Orthopaedic services in Cork for over 30 years. During that time the service has expanded and developed in line with increasing subspecialisation.

There are currently seven orthopaedic surgeons providing a wide range of consultant delivered orthopaedic services including:

  1. Hip and Knee Replacement 
  2. Sports Injuries & Surgery
  3. Robotic Joint Replacement
  4. Upper Limb Surgery
  5. Foot and ankle surgery
  6. Young Adult Hip Pain
  7. Joint Injections

Orthopaedic Services

The orthopaedic service in supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialist orthopaedic nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists. A comprehensive range of diagnostic services are available including haematology, biochemistry, microbiology and radiology. The Cork Radiology Department has ultrasound, CT, MRI and Nuclear medicine and there are musculoskeletal radiologists with expertise in interventional radiology.

Allied disciplines within the hospital include:

  • Rheumatology
  • Neurology
  • Plastic
  • Pain management

A significant proportion of orthopaedic patients are elderly with multiple co-morbidities and ample medical support is available when needed in particular cardiology, respiratory, renal and endocrine speciality services as well as access to coronary and intensive care if required.

Biography

Mr Declan Bowler graduated from RCSI in 1994, completing his Irish Higher Surgical Training in 2005.  His interest in arthroscopy and sports medicine led to his Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia, USA.  His interests in the young adult hip and hip arthroscopy led to further fellowships in Vail, Colorado and in Melbourne, Australia with leading pioneers in the field.

Since his return to Cork in 2007, his practice has grown to serve the local needs of the community for acute sports injuries and the painful young adult hip.

Biography

Stephen was appointed to the Bon Secours Health System Cork in July 2016.

A graduate of University College Dublin Medical School in 2002, Stephen has also completed Masters Degrees in Applied Biomechanics through the University of Strathclyde and a Masters of Surgery through U.C.D.

He attained FRCS status in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2014 and completed the Irish Higher Surgical Training Program in 2015. Since then Stephen has travelled to Australia for Fellowship training in Robotic Joint Replacement Surgery.

2. Robotic assisted partial knee replacement
3. Computer Navigated Total Knee replacement

Biography

Mark Dolan graduated from UCC in 1983. He completed his pre fellowship training in the Cork/Kerry region  and was awarded the FRCSI in 1988.

He commenced specialist training in Orthopaedics in Cork. He trained in  Dublin and Liverpool, completing  a research year in Liverpool with the  award of  the MCh ORTH in 1993.

He completed orthopaedic training in Dublin and  then did speciality fellowship training in Spinal surgery in Australia, before taking up  a consultant post in Orthopaedic and Spinal surgery in Cork in 2002.

He has extensive experience in primary hip and knee replacement.

He is a founder member of the Irish Spinal Surgery Society and his specialist interest is in  Surgery of the Lumbar spine.

Biography

Pat Fleming MB MMSc MCh FRCSI FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Pat Fleming qualified in Medicine from UCC in 1992 and undertook his basic surgical training in the Mercy Hospital, Cork, after completing a Masters degree in Anatomy (1993). His specialist training in Orthopaedic surgery was carried out as part of the Irish Higher Surgical Training program, and he obtained the the Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery in 2003, following which he was accepted to the specialist register in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. This was followed by a period of fellowship training in hand and shoulder surgery, in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. He was awarded a Masters degree in Surgery in 2004.

Pat was appointed a consultant in 2005, and has developed an exclusively upper limb surgical practice. He also runs the undergraduate training program in orthopaedic surgery at UCC, and has published widely in the surgical literature. He is an active member of the Irish Hand Surgery Society and the Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

Biography

Mr Shane Guerin has been appointed to the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork.  Shane graduated rom UCC in 2000.  He completed orthopaedic higher surgical training in 2011, having also earned a Masters in Surgery from Trinity College and a Masters in Engineering from Cork Institute of Technology in that timeframe. 

Shane completed Fellowship training in Canada in 2012 and then returned to Cork where he continues to work as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Cork University Hospital and South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital. 

Areas of Interest

Shane's elective subspeciality interest is  in primary and revision hip and knee replacement and knee arthroscopy

Biography

Graduating with honours in 1996, Rehan went on to complete his orthopaedic training at the Irish Higher Surgical Training Programme in 2006.

He completed his fellowship training in Joint Replacement and Sports Surgery at the world-renowned SPORTSMED SA in Adelaide, Australia in 2007.

Rehan has been working as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Cork since 2009.  He has a high volume practice, focussing on primary and revision hip and knee replacement.  He is skilled in advanced techniques in managing complications of failed or painful hip and knee replacements.  Although he has a speciality interest in total joint replacements, he also provides surgical treatment for fractures, sports related injuries around knee, foot and ankle surgery.

He published multiple articles in peer reviewed orthopaedic journals and has presented his research regionally, nationally and internationally.  He is on the Specialist Register with the Medical Council in Ireland wither operating credentials at Cork University Hospital, South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital and Bon Seours Hospital, Cork .

Professor Harty runs the research programme in Cork University Hospital. He has extensive research interests including cementless knee replacements, and revision knee systems. He is also an implant designer for a new intramedullary nailing system and founding director of Orthoxel.

Biography

Mr David Morrissey has recently been appointed to the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork as an Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon.

David graduated from TCD and underwent basic surgical training in Cork, and subsequently became a member of the RCSI.  Following this he completed a two year full time research fellowship at UCC in the development and clinical applications of orthopaedic gene therapy, obtaining a PhD in 2010.  Following this he undertook orthopaedic higher surgical training in Ireland, being awarded FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) in 2014 and completed two further years in Ireland specialising in upper limb surgery before being granted CCST. 

He further developed his subspeciality interest in shoulder and elbow surgery by completing a year long fellowship in Cambridge, UK before moving back to Ireland in August 2017.

His practice involves general trauma surgery with a tertiary referral interest in shoulder and elbow surgery allied to an elective practice dealing exclusively in all aspects of shoulder and elbow pathology

Biography

Graduated in Medicine from University College Cork. Completed general surgical training in the U.K and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Returned to Ireland to train in Orthopaedic surgery and completed speciality training obtaining the Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. Obtained a Masters degree in surgery (M.Ch.) by thesis from U.C.C. 31 publications in both international and national journals and over 50 presentations. Completed subspeciality fellowship training in Foot and Ankle surgery, Trauma and Joint Reconstruction in Toronto. Worked as a Consultant in the public service initially in Navan and then Cork for nine years and has been in full time private practice in the Bons Secours health system since 2008. Special interests in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty and in foot and ankle surgery.

Additional Information

Mr Mulcahy recently travelled to Hanoi in Vietnam as part of the group Operation Walk Ireland 2017.

Operation Walk is an American charity, who for the past 18 years have organised missions to Third World countries to perform hip & knee replacements for patients who could not otherwise access this life transforming surgery.
