Urodynamics

Provides a facility for the diagnosis and treatment of bladder dysfunctions.

The Urodynamics department provides a facility for the diagnosis and treatment of bladder dysfunctions. The service caters for inpatients and outpatients by appointment only and who are referred by Consultant Urologists or Gynaecologists within the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin and other hospitals.

The Dept. provides a wide range of diagnostic invasive and non invasive procedures including the following:

  • Flow rates: This test specifically records the urinary flow rate.  Urine is passed into a special flow rate machine which records the urinary flow rate. The test usually takes about 15 minutes and the patient must attend with a comfortably full bladder.
  • Post void residual scan: This is a scan that is performed after the bladder has been emptied to determine if the bladder is emptying sufficiently. The test usually takes about 15 minutes.
  • Filling and voiding cystometris: This is an invasive procedure that gives more information about how the bladder is functioning and can pinpoint bladder problems. The test can take 45 - 60 minutes.
  • Bladder instillations: This is a day case procedure that is performed by the consultant and urodynamics nurse for Interstitial cystitis and the treatment of bladder cancer.
  • Routine changes of long-term catheters: This is a day case procedure and is provided by the consultant and urodynamics nurse.
  • Self-Catherisation training.

Appointments are by urology or gynaecology consultant referral only. Once a referral is received from the consultant, patients will be contacted by the department to arrange a date and time for the appointment.
